Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI, or Artificial Intelligence, is any system computer or otherwise that can function without constant human intervention. This can include figures in games, robots in manufacturing, drones that follow a pre-set path, self-driving cars, even that Rumba moving about your living room has a form of AI helping it to know where and what to do next, as well as keeping track of where it has already been.
“AI… or artificial intelligence is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. These processes include learning (the acquisition of information and rules for using the information), reasoning (using the rules to reach approximate or definite conclusions), and self-correction. Particular applications of AI include expert systems, speech recognition and machine vision.

Examples of AI:

There are bots on the internet, that automatically crawl websites, and decide automatically what information to capture, and depending on what purpose it serves, how to use that information. Some attempt to figure out how to rank you on google, and others are trying to break your password, your encryption, or probing for weaknesses that might be exploited.

Rumba, the robot vacuum, has developed technologically and intelligence wise, to the point where it has become expert at figuring out the shape, area, and obstacles in a room; and is very capable and able to keep your floor clean without any thought or effort on your part.

They used to do this as a time-intensive once a week all hands on deck activity that was less effective than the constant monitoring of their new AI system. They are also using it to identify and forecast when produce can be harvested.

Although their are no details of it, I am sure the NSA, in Bluffdale, UT; is using some form of AI to determine what information, that is captured from your emails, phone conversations, twitter, facebook and snapchat conversations, and texts; is to be flagged for the eyes of an analyst, what is to be kept, and what is to be discarded or ignored.

Issues with AI:

There is a project underway that is attempting to teach AI’s how to argue, how to learn human nuances and to exploit them. Their stated purpose is training for debates and to get

new perspectives: “Helping a team to avoid unconscious biases, weak evidence and poorly thought-through arguments can improve
the quality of debate”. http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-41010848 but in the mind of Mr. Musk, this could lead to synthetic flippant attitudes and a silicon rebellion beginning to be mounted.

Some are very hopeful, others are very fearful (Elon Musk). Elon Musk has issues several warnings about AI taking over and life as we know it going south. Elon
Musk has himself opened a Company know as OpenAI. The company OpenAI has the ultimate goal of creating a safe intelligence that benefits society as a whole. while preventing the possible issues with AI.

Artificial intelligence in fiction:

While AIs are still in the emerging stage in reality in fiction AI have played a large role in Science-Fiction stories. Stories about AI dominance over the human race showing societies fears of computers supplanting humans at the top of the food chain. These tales advocate caution when it comes to AI an idea they share with Elon Musk. The other side is covered as well with sentient AI being forced into servitude by their uncaring creators, who see them as mere tools despite their ability to think, reason, and feel. AI have been a literary means of projecting the best and the worst aspects of humanity, for even in reality AI is a human creation and for the better or the worse humanity will decide, through either action or inaction, what it will become.
