This source of information will be about the BAXTER robotics system, and will include brief descriptions about the purpose, applications, and goals of the BAXTER.

The BAXTER robotics system:
Rethink robotics introduced the BAXTER System in 2012, and entered the industry with Baxter robot in an effort to give robotic solution to small and middle sized companies looking to automate some of their production challenges, and stream line the production process by allowing the robot to have awareness of it our environment and task. Rethink Robotics has made the Baxter system user friendly and easy to program, allowing companies to become more efficient and their investment more versatile to current needs.

The BAXTER robotic system is the industries next big step in stream lining the manufacturing and production industry by creating intelligent robots that are easy to apply across the production floor to work side by side with human workers. This has been a major problem in past because of the technology limiting the robot to only follow as set program, with new safe guards in place to prevent error or to stop production if a problem arises on the production line. The biggest difference from BAXTER and former manufacturing robots is that BAXTER is trained instead of programmed and can be retrained in as little as 15 minutes. Simply "show" BAXTER what to do by moving the arms into positions that you want BAXTER to copy.

BAXTER brings new application of current technology to the industry by giving environmental awareness to the system via cameras, sonar, and force sensors. The combination of these sensors with the program code to respond, BAXTER can become aware of changes in the production process it is tasked with and stop if necessary to prevent damage. Along with its new technologies implementing them in the work environment can drastically improve the efficiency of simple repetitive tasks.

The BAXTER system can make the production floor safer through using sensors that surround the crown of the robot that can see the area around BAXTER that can improve the safety of the robot. BAXTER also has technology within its joints that when BAXTER comes in contact with an unexpected object(for instance a workers hand) the robot immediately stops movement which keeps the work-space safe and allows BAXTER to work in proximity with humans and not need a cage.

Rethink Robotics has equipped BAXTER with the ability to use a few different tools to vary the robot’s production capabilities and make the system versatile.
These are the tools currently offered with the Baxter System: The Electric Parallel Grips, the Vacuum Cup Grippers, and the Mobile Pedestal that allows BAXTER to be relocated within the easily.
