Entrepreneurial Spirit:
When Brain showed up to San Fransisco he only had $1,000 in his bank account. Joe Gibbia informed Brian that rent was going to be $1,150, Brian didn't have the money to pay rent (fortune). Brian was aware of a design conference coming to the San Francisco area and realized that all of the hotels were sold out on the conference site (fortune). Brain and Joe saw an opportunity to make the money they needed to make rent. Joe had three blow-up mattresses they put in their front room and offered them to attendees of the conference. They called the idea Air-bed and breakfast (fortune). Air-bed and breakfast struggled with gaining traction and getting funding for years and getting into debt (Guy Raz). To pay off debt and fund their startup they sold custom boxes of cereal. These boxes of cereal had pictures of Obama called “Obama O’s breakfast of change” and McCain called “McCain cereal a maverick in every bit.” They Raised $20,000 to pay off debt (Guy Raz). The site continued to struggle to get people to use the site even though they had over 800 listings. Brian and Joe would go to people’s home and take pictures for them to improve the aesthetic appeal of each listing (Guy Raz). Brian Chesky is now the 65th richest person in the technology industry (Forbes). Brian is predominantly self-made, parents made somewhere around $40 dollars a year (Forbes) Airbnb is in 65,000 cities and 190 countries (Forbes). Brian is now the head of the Airbnb community and guides the company’s direction with growth (founder)
Brian’s vision includes providing a unique way for people to travel (founder.) Airbnb doesn’t just do places to stay they provide experiences. For example, you can schedule a tour of a vineyard in Portland, a Yoga retreat in Costa Rica, and customizing your own kimono in Japan. These experiences are posted by individuals just like the rooms.
This sharing economy is so new that governments are running into issues regulating it. The New York state Senate passed a bill that would prevent advertising short-term rentals, which in turn would kill any possibility for Airbnb to be successful in that state (Rosoff). In any rate, Brian, Joe, and Nate have changed the way we all travel. Giving another and a unique option other than the typical hotel stay. You will get to meet people you would have never meet and see a city in a way you would have never imagined. All thanks to a couple broke guys with a couple air mattresses in their front room.
Founders Joe Gebbia, Brian Chesky, and Nathan Blecharczyk are credited to developing the sharing economy. According to Businessinsider.com Airbnb is work 30 billion dollars without owning a single hotel. It’s the second-most-valuable US tech startup after Uber (Rosoff).
