History of the Cell Phone

Summary

The idea of the cell phone started when someone at AT&T thought that people should be able to communicate with each-other while on-the-go. Bell Labs was throwing around the idea for a car phone at the time, but an American engineer named Martin Cooper wanted to have more freedom than that. In the 1970's Martin started work with Motorola to pursue a more portable device. It took them months to put his idea out there in 1973, and wasn’t released for another 10 years in the year of 1983. The Motorola DynaTAC 8000x was the first commercially available portable cellular phone. It took about 10 hours for the phone to fully charge, and then you were only given about 30 minutes of talk time. It was priced at about 4000 dollars, which would be about $10000 now.

Modifications

Earlier cell phones used analog technology which wasn’t as effective as the digital technology that we use today. There were also issues with having lots of static noise that interfered with conversations. These mobile phones were so expensive that they ended up being a status symbol for someone who had money, and could afford one, rather than the original purpose of the invention. Which was for the convenience of all users. In the 1990’s a new technology began to be used for the cell phone called digital technology. This new technology brought a lot of customers to the cell phone. It was faster and could be made much smaller. They also made a smaller battery for the phones that held a better charge. This also made it possible for the phones to be made smaller. This was the era that helped the cell phone get recognition. Over time, new features were added. More data was able to be transferred, new looks were designed, and even touch screens were integrated. The cell phone continues to have modifications being made to it every year. Some recent improvements we've seen include water-resistance, Bluetooth integration, even longer-lasting batteries, high-quality camera integration, and 3D touch. All of these modifications were made to better the mobile phone and make it more attractive to users for daily use.

Importance of cell phone:
Over the past decade, the increasing importance of cell phones has made them almost a necessity for most people. Even remote and underdeveloped countries have some access to cell phone technology and wireless services.

The importance of cell phones has increased the competition in the wireless service provider industry, making cell phones very affordable and very easy to use. Cell phones have become almost a status symbol in addition to the convenience and security that comes from owning them.

1971 - The term "cell" comes into play

BellSouth Corp. proposed splitting phone service into different areas across the cities. These areas were called "cells."

1973 - The first cell phone is tried

Dr. Martin Cooper invented the portable hand-held telephone that didn't need to be powered by the car. He was the first person to make a mobile phone call.

1983 - The cell phone goes public

It took ten years for the technology that Dr. Cooper invented to become available to the public. The first public cell phones were put out by Motorola.

1984 - SBC and BellSouth Corp. launched its first wireless services.

1989 - The flip phone introduced

Motorola came out with a new design where the mouthpiece flipped over the top of the keypad. It was the first flip phone.

1992 - The first smartphone invented
The first device that had the making of a smartphone was developed by Frank Canova in 1992 at IBM. It started out as a prototype called "Angler," and in November of that year, it was presented to the world at the computer industry trade show.

1993 - Text messaging developed

Developers in Europe came up with a way to send written messages over the phone. It was called texting.

1994 - IBM Simon
A better-revised version of the Forerunner was put on the market by BellSouth in 1994 and was called the IBM Simon Personal Communicator. It could send and receive both emails and faxes.

1996 - Nokia
Nokia released a digital cellular PDA called the Nokia 9000 communicator. It was a hybrid phone; a cross between the PC and the cell phone.

2000 - Cingular Wireless was created

SBC Communications Inc. and BellSouth Corp. build Cingular Wireless, the second-largest wireless carrier.

2002 - Improved Smartphone

The smartphone could send and receive emails and messages, but it didn't have a speaker or microphone. This meant it needed a headset to work.

2002 - A camera phone made

A company called Sanyo made a phone that could snap pictures. Later the user could download the images to a computer to be printed.

2004 - Acquiring companies

Cingular acquires AT&T Wireless, a spinoff of AT&T Corp. and the largest provider of wireless service in the U.S.

2005 - The Cell Phone Recycle Act

A law was passed in California that said cell phone companies had to allow customers to return old cell phones to be recycled. This was because cell phones can contain materials that are harmful if left in a landfill.
SBC Communications Inc. also acquires AT&T Corp. and becomes AT&T Inc.

2006 - AT&T as it lives and breathes

AT&T Inc. and BellSouth Corp. merge, consolidating ownership of the Cingular Wireless brand and operating under one global brand.

2007 - The Apple iPhone is released

Apple released its first iPhone, and it changed the cellular industry. It featured a touch screen and allowed users to do almost anything they could do from a home computer, which changed the way people lived.

2008 - The first Android phone released

October 2008 the first Android phone was released. The phone was produced by HTC and called the HTC Dream (T-Mobile G-1). It wasn't until July of 2009 that the first Android phone would receive its successor, known as the MyTouch 3G. Also with T-mobile, this device was released with the debut of Exchange Support. 2009 - Apple
In 2009 Apple also released the iPhone 3, accompanying the 3GS, including "Siri," the companies voice assistant. With Siri being introduced and brought into the market, others followed, giving way to the google platform and to the future google assistant and other forms of voice communication and recognition.

2010 - LTE
With the turn of the decade, the LTE/4G network started to exist. The HTC EVO 4G was a flagship phone for HTC and featured the new network and speeds that outreached the old 3G wireless. Phones still use the 3G bandwidth and towers when 4G is not able to be supplied to phones, because of the band on which 4G operates compared to the higher frequency of 3G networks.

Current 2018
Most major cell companies are still running LTE and various platforms such as "spark," and others, and speculation of 5G to be integrated in a near future, which was used at the recent Olympics. The 5G network, such as the 4G had surpassed in speeds of 3G will do the same. It is thought to advance far beyond 4G and that of even wifi. We will have to wait and see the true capabilities of this network, as we waited for the 4G network to come online.
