The first GoPro camera was developed by a man named Nick Woodman in the year of 2002. Nick grew up in Menlo Park, California and later moved to Atherton, California. Woodman graduated high school in his hometown of Atherton California in 1993. He then went on to graduate from the University of California, San Diego in 1997. As a member of his high school surfing team, Woodman spent most of his days on the beach surfing. While on a surfing getaway to Australia, Nick had a dream of capturing better quality video of action sports such as snowboarding, biking, and especially surfing. At the time of this trip Nick was just getting by as he was selling cheap bead and shell belts out of his Volkswagen bus. The thing that really made this dream become a reality was the generous investment of his parent of $230,000.
The man behind the idea: Nick Woodman
Early life
Nick Woodman was born on June 24th 1975 to Dean Woodman an investment banker, and Concepcion Federman. Woodman grew up in Menlo Park, California and Atherton, California. When Woodman was at the age of 8 he remembers falling in love with surfing when he first laid his eyes on a poster of someone surfing from a surfing magazine that was hanging up on his friend's wall. He took this passion with him throughout his life as he spent his time in High School selling T-Shirts at football games to raise money for his surfing club that he had created. At the time Woodman was ready to graduate he decided to take advantage of the beach and choose a college that was near the beach. His love for surfing eventually brought him to the University of California, San Diego where he graduated in 1997 with a bachelor's degree in visual arts and a minor in creative writing. After college Woodman told himself that if he was 30 years old and not a successful business owner he would get a real job and essentially give up on his dream to become a business owner. In an interview Woodman said "When I got out of college, I gave myself till I was 30 to invent a product. If I couldn't do it by then, I would just get a real job. And that fear – the fear of a real job – motivated me to be an entrepreneur.” [1] [2]

Woodman has taken investment from his father and turned them into his millions and millions of dollars. Because of the generosity and trust of Woodman's father, Nick was able to make his dream a reality. [3]
The company
Nick Woodman got his inspiration for his revolutionary GoPro idea when he was on a surfing trip in Australia and Indonesia in 2002. Woodman had a dream of becoming an amateur photographer but found this to be difficult considering the price of expensive photography equipment. While on his surfing trip, Woodman decided he needed to document everything that was happening so he strapped a camera to his wrist using a rubber band. This was the first GoPro camera. Upon returning home Woodman got an investment from his father of $230,000 to get his company up and running.
