OpenAI is a non-profit company researching Artificial Intelligence. It strives to develop friendly and ethical AIs to benefit society in many way including but not limited to medical research. All patents and research done by the company is given freely to other companies as a form of collaboration. The company was established in part due to concerns of the growing intelligence of AGI (Artificial Generalized Intelligence).
History Several investors most notably Elon Musk and Sam Altman pledged over 1 billion dollars to this venture announced back in Oct. of 2015.
OpenAI released the public beta "OpenAI Gym" in April of 2016[1]
December 5, 2016 Universe is released, a software designed to train and develop the AI's intelligence through gaming and websites.
In August of 2017 the game Dota 2 held its annual tournament. OpenAI was pitted against the top 1v1 Dota 2 player in the world Danil Ishutin who goes by the gaming alias "Dendi". OpenAI defeated Dendi on a live broadcast. A feat that shows a level of intelligence far above previous AIs that have learned to play games such as Chess and Go.
As of February 21, 2018 Elon Musk removed himself from the board. Stating "Potential future conflict of interest" this is due to hi other company Tesla which is developing an AI system for its self driving cars. While he removed him self from the board he does remain a donor of the company.[4] This move was announced through a blog post on OpenAI's website. Also included in this post were the names of new donors to OpenAI. Some of the notable names being Game Developer Gabe Newell and the founder of Skype Jaan Tallinn.[5]
Goals and Objectives The driving force behind OpenAI and the investment into the project comes from the belief of several scientists. Scientists such as Stephen Hawking have express concerns of the future of AI and that when AI acquires human or greater intelligence it will be able to re-design and develop itself in ways that could be a threat to humanity. OpenAI looks to develop AI with humanities long term in mind.[1]
OpenAI talk on how had it is to really grasp how much AI even at a human level of intelligence can benefit society as a who is or in turn how much damage it can cause.[1] Human-level intelligence is hard to accurately perdict when it will appear in AI and there for safety should always be a concern and not postponed. OpenAI's goal is to make a safe intelligence that ultimately benefits society as a whole.
The former CEO of Infosys, Vishal Sikka stated that openness in the world of AI was in the best interest of humanity and that OpenAI supports a cause to do purposeful work when it comes to the utilization of AI in industry.
OpenAI Gym OpenAI Gym, is a software development kit for AI research. Gyms objective is to promote algorithms that generalize well, this means that the algorithm can be utilized in more than one application. OpenAIs ultimate goal is to be a leader in AGI or Artificial General Intelligence, this promotes the idea of AI learning to accomplish many tasks effectively rather than focusing on a few particular specialized task. Currently Gym can only be used with the python programming languages but hopes to expand as time goes one [2]
RoboSumo A software designed to force AI to compete with one another in order to develop and reiterate skills to become more intelligent. Igor Mordatch referred to this research as an AI arms race. RoboSumo is a learning applications in which virtual robots lack basic knowledge such as walking, they are then given goals to move in a direction or to push an opponent out of the ring. As agents go through the learning process they must adapt to conditional changes such as increased winds or forces. This intern lets the robots learn and adapt to these new conditions to brace for such changes.[3]
