In fact, there may be many people who are reading this right now that have no idea what Oracle is or what they do. The fact of the matter is that Oracle Corporation is one of the most influential companies that you have never heard of. Today I want to talk about the history of Oracle, how it was founded, what kinds of technologies they develop, and the kind of impact they are making on the technological world we live in. History
To tell the story of Oracle you need to first tell the story of Larry Ellison, Ed Oates, And Bob Miner. In 1977 Larry Ellison decided to team up with Miner and Oats to create a software development company. they took a lot of inspiration from a paper written by Edgar F. Codd on RDBMS or relational database management systems. Ellison had heard about a system that IBM had created called System R database. Ellison ultimately wanted to make a software that would work with IBM’s system. The Company was originally named Software Development Laboratories or SDL. After the team was unable to use run their programs with System R, due to the fact that IBM was very secretive with their error codes, Ellison and his partners decided to the name of their company to Relational Software Inc and began developing their own unique database software systems. In 1982 the company developed a software names Oracle and again changed their name to Oracle Systems Corporation in an attempt to better align themselves with their new technology. Oracle was born and they began to develop some of the most widely used database software technology in the world. In fact Oracle is only second behind Microsoft in terms of the largest software development companies by revenue amount. Products
Oracle develops database software and cloud engineered systems that help businesses of all shapes and sizes to control their data and information in order to be as successful as possible. In their early days Oracle found a lot of success by using the C programming language in their software. Using this software technology made it rather easy for the company’s designers and programmers to develop systems that many different clients could use due to the popularity with C language in most computer operating systems. Their main product known as Oracle Database is one of the most widely used database software systems used in the world. In 2013 the company rolled out a cloud based version of the technology called Oracle 12c, where the C stands for cloud, due to the popularity and efficiency of cloud integrated technologies. Oracle also develops many other systems like Oracle Beehive, Oracle Fusion Middleware, and Oracle Business Applications. These different software systems are used in a large variety of industries including fintech, network design, postal services, retail, hospitality, manufacturing, and many more. Company Growth
Oracle has seen significant growth since it was origionally founded in 1977. Today the company currently has more than 138,000 employees and brings in more than 37 billion dollars in annual revenue. This is pretty impressive considering the company was founded about 40 years ago. One area that has helped to spark greater growth for the company is the recent demand in cloud based technologies and softwares. Oracle has been of of the leaders in providing different business facing cloud technologies and they have seen impressive revenues as they develop and distribute more Saas and Paas technologies. In todays convenience economy consumers and businesses are looking for faster and more creative ways to deliver internet based services and solutions. As the cloud is being utilized more and more companies and consumers are needing software that is already developed and maintained for them so that they can focus on other areas of their business. In the past two years Oracle and put a lot of focus on their Saas (Software as a service) and Paas (Platform as a service) technologies and have seen greater returns from these than their Iaas (infrastructure as a service) offerings. The figure below shows the revenue growth trend from Q1 of 2015 to Q2 of 2017.
