Steven "Steve" Paul Jobs, born February 24, 1955, was an information technology entrepreneur and an inventor/innovator. Steve Jobs is most well-known for being the co-founder of Apple and also Pixar. In 1976 he started Apple in his garage with the help of Steve Wozniak. Over the last two decades in particular Apple’s revolutionary products have largely dictated the evolution of modern technology. He died in 2011 after battling pancreatic cancer; however his legacy still lives on in the companies that he created.
Early life
In grade school Jobs became very bored with his studies, and by third grade he had already been suspended a few times as he played pranks on other students regularly. His father, however, blamed the school for not challenging him hard enough. In 4th grade his teacher Imogene Hill was finally able to turn him around. She bribed him into learning, and was able to kindle a passion for learning things. By the end of this year, they wanted him to skip fifth and sixth grade and go to junior high, though his parents chose otherwise. Later, in high school Steve developed an interest in electronics and technology but also was involved with the counterculture of the 70s and took an interest in art and literature. It was also in high school where he met Steve Wozniak.
Apple
Prior to creating Apple, Steve Wozniak designed a low-cost digital blue box. This device would use different tones to manipulate the AT&T network. Steve Jobs, who was more adept to business, decided that they could sell it. So they went around their college campus selling these illegal devices. Jobs found that electronics could be fun and profitable and he started going to the homebrew computer club with Wozniak. In 1976 they created the Apple 1 computer. Wozniak made the computers, while Steve Jobs helped design and market them as the first personal computer. And thus Apple was born and by 1980 had a market value of 1.2 billion dollars; Most of the money they made was from the second generation the Apple 2.
After the Apple 2, things began to go downhill for Apple. After a few failures and almost tearing the company apart over a competition between two products, Jobs was eventually fired from Apple. This was devastating to Steve Jobs. He could not believe that he was being forced out of the company that he founded. Jobs later credited this experience with allowing him to enter one of the most creative periods in his life. Maybe being forced out of Apple was in retrospect a good thing.
Pixar/NeXT
Being forced out at Apple, and having no idea what to do NeXT, Jobs was able to use the money that he had made to start two new companies. The first, NeXT computers, wasn’t too successful because it was a way over designed and way too expensive for its capabilities. NeXT did however have great design and was sold in certain markets. The other company he created, Pixar, was hugely successful. Pixar was created from the Computer Graphics Division of George Lucas' company being bought and rebranded by Steve Jobs and starting with just over 40 employees. It used advanced computers to render high quality animation. This company made some of the most iconic animated movies ever made and was later bought by Disney.
Return to Apple
Apple really struggled more after Steve Jobs left. They really needed a CEO who could bring the company back to its core values. In 1997 Apple bought NeXT for $400 million, started using their operating system and made him the interim CEO. While being an interim or advisory CEO at Apple, Jobs was still acting CEO at Pixar and declined to be in the position of power at Apple while he was still conducting operations at Pixar. He had such a passion for the company that he created, the “interim” was eventually dropped, and he began to eliminate unnecessary products and create new revolutionary ones. Over the NeXT decade or so he invented the iPod and iPad and reinvented the personal computer and cell phone. The products he created over this period of time that they turned Apple from a struggling company to the worlds most valuable in just over a decade.
In an effort to give life back into Apple, Jobs met with Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, to create a deal that would drop the on-going patent battles between the two companies. Apple also promised to have Internet Explorer as the default browser on Apple computers for about 5 years in exchange for Microsoft Office Mac applications to still be supported. Microsoft also invested $150 million dollars in Apple. In addition to this new deal, Steve also brought with him some of his executives from NeXT, implemented great catering service to his employees and restricted the amount of information that employees were allowed to say about new and upcoming products, preferring a policy of secrecy to help build up the hype of new products.
Death
On October 5 2011 Jobs died after complications from a relapse of his pancreatic cancer that was treated a few years back. For two weeks following his death Apple’s homepage displayed a portrait with his name and lifespan. Many flags around the country flew at half-staff and on October 19 Apple held a private memorial service for its employees. He will always be remembered as he truly changed the world with his innovations.
On September 12, 2017, Tim Cook, CEO of Apple announced the opening of the "Steve Jobs Theater" on Apple's Campus in Cupertino California. This theater was dedicated to Steve Jobs and what he provided to Apple.
