Alexander Graham Bell: (Image 1) Basic Info Birth: March 3, 1847 Birth Location: Edinburgh, Scotland Death: August 2, 1922 Occupation: Educator, Inventor, Linguist, Scientist
Alexander Graham Bell was born into a good family. His father was well known for his work with people and speech impediment. His mother was an accomplished pianist, but was nearly deaf. As a result of this, Bell became fascinated with speech and communication. He developed a system to communicating by writing. He was, in all aspects of the word, a child prodigy. He managed to get a job as a teacher at the ripe age of 16! And after moving to America, he found a job at the Boston School of the Deaf. And was very influential in helping the deaf. Bell soon developed a theory of using communication wire strung around America, and pitches to create a new form of communication. He was determined to find and develop his "Harmonic Telegraph." But as he was developing this technology, he wondered if he could make human voices travel on the telegraph wires. He soon started devoting his time and resources to developing this technology. He soon found, an electrician by the name of Thomas Watson and together they tried to create this technology. Work seemed to progress, then they had a breakthrough when they transmitted a single noise across their "telephone" on June 2, 1885. "It was the day the telephone was born," claimed Bell. On March 10, 1886, while experimenting on the telephone, Bell spilled acid on himself. And said, "Watson, come here. I want you!" Watson heard the voice over the wire and thus they had their first telephone call. It was a breakthrough! He slowly but surely gained fame for his invention. He faced many lawsuits, but is now known as the father of the telephone.
