The topic I have chose is the Tesla GigaFactory. This technology is going to pioneer the development of high energy batteries that can be used is vehicles. This is a technology that we do not have enough of.
-What does Tesla plan to do with the new factory and new technology.
-What are the major benefits of this type of technology
-Will this be a technology that is feasible?
What kind of impact will this have on society and the environment
-Are the societal benefits greater than the financial costs?
-What are the environmental risks/benefits?
The Tesla Gigafactory will be one of the premier manufacturing facilities in the world. It's size alone dwarfs any other battery facility currently in use. If you take all of the lithium-ion battery facilities in the world and combine them, the Tesla Gigafactory is larger. The scope of their output is also impressive When running at full capacity the Gigafactory will produce 35GWh of batteries per year. That is more than the combined yearly output of all other lithium-ion facilities combined.
The Gigafactory will be completely self- sustaining as far as energy requirements. It will use all renewable energy sources. The plant will have a combination of geothermal, solar and wind power that will supply all of the plants energy needs. The carbon footprint of the facility will be significantly less than plants a fraction of its size. Though the plant is massive, the architecture is in a diamond shape rather than the traditional box design of most factories. This allowed the plant to take up less space than a traditionally designed plant and allowed them to disturb less of the area on which the plant is built.Tesla Gigafactory
Elon Musk insisted that the plant be aesthetically pleasing to the surrounding area. https://www.tesla.com/gigafactory
Gigafactory 1
Currently has 317 Tesla employee's and 52 panasonic source
Directly employ 6,500 people and indirectly create between 20,000-30,000 jobs source
$5 billion investment to get started
Produces 2170 battery cell
Goal of 75 cells per second
Tesla plans to add "2 or 3" more gigafactories to the United States along with at least one in Europe and Asia.
